Ensure the soil is consistently moist, and you’ll be rewarded with fresh and flavorful chives all year round.

–Oregano: Oregano can be successfully grown indoors in low-light conditions, as long as it is provided with the right soil and drainage. Be sure to keep the soil moist but not overly wet, and make sure to provide plenty of air circulation. With the right care, oregano can thrive even in low-light conditions.
–Thyme: With its fragrant leaves, thyme is a popular herb that adds a savory touch to various dishes. It can adapt well to indoor environments that lack natural sunlight. Thyme requires well-drained soil and regular watering but be careful not to over-water as this can harm the plant. Its low-maintenance qualities make thyme an excellent choice for beginner gardeners.

The Best LED Grow Lights of 2023
What to consider when looking for high-quality LED grow lights for your indoor herb garden:
1. Light spectrum: Look for LED grow lights that provide a full spectrum of light, including both blue and red wavelengths. This helps support vegetative growth and flowering stages of plants.
2. Efficiency: Energy efficiency is crucial as it affects your electricity bills. Check for lights that have a high Photosynthetic Photon Efficacy (PPE) rating, which indicates how efficiently plants can use the light provided.
3. Adjustable intensity: Lights with adjustable intensity allow you to tailor the brightness to your plants’ needs during different growth stages. This flexibility can optimize plant growth and save energy.
4. Durability and warranty: Consider lights that are built with high-quality materials and come with a warranty. This ensures longevity and protection against potential defects.
5. Cooling system: LED lights emit heat, so it’s important to choose ones with efficient cooling systems to prevent overheating and damage to your plants.
Inexpensive Grow Lights to Get your Garden started
It has been a goal of mine to buy grow lights and successfully start my herb garden indoors. However, commercial grow lights are too expensive. So, I have found a perfect inexpensive method that meets all of your needs with a little research.
How can inexpensive grow lights replace expensive standard ones?
If you purchase the correct bulbs, you can effectively grow seeds under inexpensive shop lights.
Which light bulbs are the best to use you ask?
A daylight fluorescent tube or LED bulb with a Kelvin rating of at least 5,000 and a minimum of 2,500 lumens would work best. The lumen rating should be 2,500 or higher. You can find them on Amazon here or pick them up at your local hardware store.
Make sure to get a fixture that will accommodate 2 to 4 bulbs that can be suspended on a chain and adjusted as the plants grow.
Position the lights several inches above the seedlings and adjust them as they grow. This will ensure that the seedlings receive adequate light for strong, healthy growth. Remember to turn the lights off for 12 hours each day to simulate day and night cycles or you get an automatic timer to make things more efficient. Lastly, don’t forget to talk to your indoor herbs and tell them encouraging words every now and then!
What are Full Spectrum LED Grow Lights?
Full spectrum LED grow lights are lights that emit light across the entire spectrum of wavelengths, similar to natural sunlight. These lights are designed to provide the specific wavelengths of light needed for plant growth and are used as an artificial light source for indoor gardening.
When it comes to indoor herb gardening, full spectrum LED grow lights can be used to mimic natural sunlight and provide the necessary light energy for photosynthesis. Here’s how they can be utilized:
–Seed germination: Full spectrum LED grow lights can be used to provide the ideal lighting conditions for seeds to sprout and germinate. By placing the lights a few inches above the seeds, they can receive the right amount of light to kickstart their growth.
-Supplementing sunlight: In areas where natural sunlight is limited or during winter when daylight hours are shorter, LED grow lights can be used to supplement the requirements of indoor herb plants. They can be used to extend the duration of light exposure or provide consistent lighting throughout the day.
-Light intensity regulation: Full spectrum LED lights can be dimmed or adjusted to control the intensity of light that herbs receive. Different growth stages of herbs may require varying levels of light intensity, and LED grow lights provide the flexibility to meet these requirements.
-Customized light spectrum: LED grow lights can be tailored to emit specific wavelengths or color ratios to cater to different stages of plant growth. By adjusting the light spectrum, specific wavelengths can be emphasized to promote vegetative growth, flowering, or fruiting, depending on the herbs being grown.
-Energy efficiency: LED grow lights are energy-efficient compared to traditional grow lights. They consume less energy and generate less heat, making them ideal for indoor herb gardening. This allows gardeners to provide consistent lighting without worrying about excessive energy consumption or heat damage to the plants.
Overall, full spectrum LED grow lights provide an efficient and effective solution for indoor herb gardening by mimicking natural sunlight, promoting plant growth, and allowing gardeners to have greater control over the lighting conditions.
There You Have It!
In conclusion, for beginner gardeners looking to grow herbs indoors without access to direct sunlight, there are several options to consider.
These plants have adapted well to low-light conditions and are relatively easy to grow:
-Mint: Mint varieties such as spearmint, peppermint, or chocolate mint can thrive in low-light environments. They prefer moist soil, so make sure to water them regularly.
-Chives: Chives are versatile herbs that add a mild onion-like flavor to dishes. They can tolerate lower light conditions, but it’s best to provide them with a few hours of indirect sunlight each day.
-Oregano: Oregano is a robust herb that can handle low-light conditions. This herb prefers well-draining soil, so ensure it doesn’t stay overly damp.
-Parsley: Parsley is a popular culinary herb that grows well indoors. It can tolerate lower light levels, making it suitable for beginners. Keep the soil consistently moist and provide some indirect sunlight.
-Thyme: Thyme is a hardy herb that can withstand less light. It requires well-draining soil and moderate watering. Ensure it receives a few hours of indirect sunlight daily.
-Cilantro: Cilantro, also known as coriander, is a flavorful herb that can tolerate lower light levels. It’s crucial to keep the soil consistently moist and provide some indirect sunlight.
Remember that while these herbs can grow in low-light conditions, they will still benefit from some amount of indirect sunlight. Placing them near a window or using artificial grow lights can help simulate natural lighting conditions. Additionally, regular watering, well-draining soil, and proper care are essential to their overall growth and health.
